What is occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy seeks to support people who face difficulties in participating in daily activities that are meaningful to them, such as school, play, work, or leisure.

These difficulties may arise from physical, sensory, or cognitive issues, which can be a result of illness, developmental delays, or ageing.

With the support of an occupational therapist, individuals can acquire the ability to perform everyday tasks and regain independence in their lives.

What’s the difference between occupational therapy and physiotherapy?

Occupational therapy focuses on holistic and mental wellness as well as finer motor and cognitive skills. The treatment plan may include physical exercise, therapeutic adaptations, as well as home modifications. For instance, for someone recovering from a stroke, an occupational therapist might develop treatments to help with the management of daily activities, like eating, showering and getting dressed.

Physiotherapy focuses on treating physical impairments (body movement and function). Physiotherapists are trained extensively in body mechanics and use treatment techniques that are designed to reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. For someone recovering from a stroke, a physiotherapist might develop exercises to strengthen the muscles for walking, standing, and sitting up from a chair.

Why is occupational therapy important?

Occupational therapy can improve a person’s quality of life, no matter how old they are or what stage of life they are in.

For adults and seniors, the need for occupational therapy may arise from life-altering conditions and diagnoses, such as cancer, dementia, or a stroke. Besides working together to regain independence in day-to-day life, an occupational therapist may also identify and recommend environment modifications to make their home more suitable to their current physical condition.

Children with developmental delays may be referred to an occupational therapist to learn important life skills, such as getting dressed or writing. They may also develop positive behaviours and learn social skills through therapy sessions, so that they may navigate social situations with greater ease.

Reviews from Our Customers

Nice, cheerful therapist who connects with patients

The occupational therapist, Hannah, is a nice, cheerful person. She is able to make contact with my dad, who is a dementia patient and my dad is able to participate in the cognitive exercises with her.

What to expect during an occupational therapy session?

Before the therapy session, it would be helpful to prepare your loved one’s medical records, including doctor’s memos and referral letters, health reports, hospital discharge letters, as well as investigations (e.g. X-rays or MRIs).

During the session, our occupational therapist will assess your loved one’s medical history, their ability to carry out daily living activities, understand your goals for their care, and develop a personalised treatment plan that can be carried out in your home.

Thereafter, visits may comprise light exercises, further discussions regarding their current condition, and ways to further develop their treatment plan as their condition changes and improves.
