An Introduction to Hypertension
Our blood pressure is always changing in response to our physical activity, emotions, age, environment and other factors.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, however, occurs when blood is pumped around the body at a higher than normal pressure over a prolonged period. A reading of systolic pressure over 140 or higher or a diastolic pressure of 80 or higher that stays high over time indicates that you may have hypertension.
1 in 4 Singaporeans between 30 and 69 years old have hypertension
Hypertension is a common condition among Singaporeans, especially older adults. In fact, more than half of those in their 60s have hypertension.
It is important to manage our blood pressure well. Having prolonged high blood pressure puts a lot of stress on artery walls and can lead to many health complications, including heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure and even blindness.
Managing hypertension at home
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help us regulate our blood pressure. Besides regular vital signs monitoring and medication, physical activity can reduce our blood pressure to acceptable levels. Exercising can also help to reduce stress, which is another factor that may increase our blood pressure.
Diet can affect our blood pressure too. Add more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, fish, and nuts to your diet, and cut back on your consumption of sugar, salt, fats and alcohol for a healthier you.

Top questions about Hypertension Care

What is the main cause of hypertension?
While age, genetics and existing health conditions may play a role in our risk of developing hypertension, many lifestyle factors can lead to high blood pressure too.
Factors that may cause hypertension include:
- Genetics, especially if your parents or close relatives have high blood pressure
- Age (our risk of developing hypertension increases with age)
- Chronic conditions, such as diabetes and high cholesterol
- Lack of physical activity
- Obesity
- Medication
- Stress
- Smoking
- Alcohol consumption
What are the warning signs of hypertension?
Nearly one-third of people with hypertension do not know that they have the condition. Here are some of the symptoms indicating that you may have hypertension:
- Severe headache
- Fatigue or confusion
- Vision problems
- Dizziness
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Irregular heartbeat
- Blood in the urine
- Pounding in your chest, neck, or ears
What are the stages of hypertension?
According to local guidelines, there are 3 classifications for our blood pressure.
Normal blood pressure levels should be lower than 130/80 mmHg.
Those whose blood pressure falls in the range between 130/80 mmHg and 139/89 mmHg are considered pre-hypertensive and should monitor their blood pressure closely and make necessary lifestyle changes to manage their prehypertension.
If your blood pressure reading is 140/90 mmHg and above, you have hypertension. Do consult a doctor for professional medical advice and next steps.
