Knee pain is a common condition that affects Singaporeans of all ages

Injuries, poor posture and form when exercises, not warming up or cooling down properly, improper stretching of muscles, being overweight, overuse, infections, sprains and strains are some of the reasons why we experience knee pain.

From young adults to seniors, knee pain is a condition that can affect our everyday lives. Many of us may associate knee pain with age or wear and tear, accepting it as a natural part of our lives. However, knee pain is not normal and should not be accepted as such.

It is easy to dismiss neck pain or a stiff neck as a common ailment that poses minor inconvenience and put off treatment. However, delaying treatment can lead to chronic pain that may progress into headaches, migraines and shoulder pain that radiates into other areas of the body.

Common conditions linked to knee pain

  • Injury
  • Arthritis
  • Dislocated Kneecap
  • Infections
  • Hip or Foot Pain
  • Cysts

Say goodbye to knee pain without surgery

A common misconception many Singaporeans have is that the only solution to knee pain is surgery, such as knee replacement surgery, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction or repair of a torn meniscus. However, there are a number of non-invasive solutions that can help us heal and prevent chronic pain and complications.

Rest can prevent further strain on our knees. However, depending on the underlying cause of your knee pain, rest may do more harm than good. For example, if your knee pain is caused by arthritis, limiting movement can make things worse. Doing the right exercises may help to limit its progression and help you feel better instead.

Using a combination of heat, traction, manual treatment, movement and exercise, physiotherapy can help to ease pain and stiffness, prevent future injuries and slow the progression of conditions like arthritis. As experts trained in musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiothoracic problems, physiotherapists can identify the root cause of your pain and help you regain mobility and independence. Medication may also be prescribed to reduce inflammation or for pain relief.

Don’t let pain take control of your life. Seek treatment and lead an active, energetic and pain-free life today!

How do you get rid of knee pain fast?

There are several home remedies you can turn to to reduce knee pain, whether it’s due to a recent injury or arthritis that has been present for years:

Avoid resting too much: Immobility can lead to weakened muscles and worsen joint pain.
Exercise: Do exercises that can strengthen muscles supporting your knee, including cardio, weight training and stretching. Some of the exercise you can try include walking, swimming, water aerobics, stationary cycling and tai chi.
Avoid falls: Knee pain makes us more likely to lose balance and fall, which can worsen the condition. Make sure your home is well-lit, use handrails where possible and don’t be shy about using walking aids such as a crutch, cane, splints and/or braces to keep you stead.
Try ‘RICE’: Rest your knees, ice the affected area to reduce swelling, wear a compressive bandage and elevate your knee.
Lose weight: Losing weight can take stress off your knees. Begin with small steps such as adjusting your diet and exercising.
Wear the right shoes: Cushioned insoles can reduce the stress on our knees and is especially helpful for those with knee osteoarthritis.
If your knee pain still does not subside with these home remedies or you would like to better understand the root cause of the pain and find out the appropriate next steps, reach out to our Care Advisors at 6100 0055 or careadvisor[email protected] to find out how our doctors and therapists can help.

What should I expect during my first physiotherapy session?

During your first visit, our physiotherapist will first assess your health and physical condition, understand the goals, develop and advise a personalised therapy treatment plan which can be completed in the home setting.

If time permits, the physiotherapist will also conduct these exercises with you during the first visit.

What do physiotherapists do?

Physiotherapists are allied health professionals who have an in-depth knowledge of how the body works and specialised hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat injury and disability. Trained to pinpoint the root cause of injuries and other ailments, a physiotherapist will first assess your holistic health and wellbeing, before determining the kind of movements and exercises you can and should do to aid in recovery, taking into consideration a multitude of factors including your individual needs, conditions and mobility.

A physiotherapist may use different approaches to treat and manage your condition, including movement and exercise, manual therapy and hydrotherapy.

Had a good experience with Homage's teleconsultation. The doctor is qualified, friendly and guided me on examination. She also explained my symptoms to me in detail, which is useful. The report provided has detailed information, and medicine was delivered to me on the same day even though my appointment was in the evening.
