How do you take care of individuals with cancer?

Facing cancer is no mean feat for both the patient and caregiver. Caring for a loved one with cancer goes beyond medical treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. We need to create a personalised holistic care plan that addresses physical, emotional and psychological needs.

Palliative care is often integrated to manage symptoms and improve quality of life during cancer treatment, and support services like pain management, nutritional counselling, and physiotherapy may help to alleviate the side effects of treatment and improve overall well being.

Emotional support from loved ones, psychologists, and support groups are also crucial in navigating the emotional rollercoaster from the point of diagnosis and throughout the treatment process.

It is not easy to take in the news of a cancer diagnosis. Read our article on coping with a cancer diagnosis and how to manage the side effects of cancer treatment.

What we offer

Our nurses, caregivers, and therapists are fully trained and equipped to provide cancer care and rehabilitation services at every stage of your cancer journey:

Stage I

Early-stage cancer is located in one area and has not spread to nearby tissues. Individuals with this form of cancer have a high chance of full recovery, usually by removing the tumour with surgery.

Care Support

  • Medical escort
  • Medication reminders
  • Post-surgery care
  • Nursing care
  • Rehabilitation therapy

Stage II or III

At this stage, cancer may have spread to nearby tissues and/or lymph nodes, but not to other parts of the body. Recovery may be possible with more extensive treatment.

Care Support

  • Medical escort
  • Medication reminders
  • Staying active
  • Rehabilitation therapy
  • Night care
  • Palliative care

Stage IV

In advanced or metastatic cancer, cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body. In most cases, stage IV cancer is no longer curable. Hospice treatment may be recommended instead.

Care Support

  • Hospice care
  • Personal care
  • Medication reminders
  • Nursing care
  • Rehabilitation therapy
  • Night care

What to expect during a home-based cancer care visit

“I contacted Homage for private nursing care at home for my mother who is a terminal cancer patient. The experience so far has been pleasant. The assessment was done by a very senior nursing professional and the nursing care staff has been very helpful, patient and understanding. Their way of handling my mother who has multiple insertions in helping her with her toilet needs, bathing and changing clothes etc was satisfying.

The Homage app works extremely seamlessly with very easy access to appointed care professionals, reports and summary of services provided. It is quite easy to create new requests as well.

Overall a good service experience!”

We needed interim help with my mom who has cancer and is a fall risk while waiting for the new helper to arrive. My mom has had 2 visits with 2 Homage Care Pro, both were very helpful, caring, friendly and attentive, and my mom felt very comfortable chatting with them. She was previously resistant to the idea of having part-time caregivers as she felt uncomfortable with the thought of having to adjust to a new person with each visit but now has nothing but praise for the Homage Care Pro. Two thumbs up to the admin team also for their very quick response to my very last minute bookings. Will definitely recommend.”

What to expect during a home-based cancer care visit

During a home-based cancer care visit, a professional caregiver, nurse or therapist will come to your home to provide elder care services like assistance with daily living activities, nursing procedures, and therapy.

Note: If you need nursing care, let us know the existing healthcare products available at home before the visit. If you do not have the appropriate products or tools required for the procedure, our Homage nurse will prepare the appropriate medical products required to carry out the nursing procedure

During the visit, the Homage Care Pro will introduce themselves, assess your health and preferences, and collaborate to create and personalise a suitable care plan. Assistance with activities of daily living, medication management, rehabilitation, and post-surgery care are common cancer care services that we can help with.

“At the start of visits, I greet my clients and check in on any past medical/social history. Knowing important things like previous falls or traumas can go a long way in ensuring safety and quality service. After every visit, I prepare notes which are service-related to assist other CPs who are handling the case after me.” — Care Pro Ralphael Lim, Registered Nurse

Top questions about Cancer Care

Service FAQ

How long does a cancer patient live in hospice?

It is not possible to accurately predict how long a person with cancer will live, hence hospice care for cancer patients can last from just days to 6 months, and sometimes even longer.

What is the minimum duration for a cancer care visit?

The duration of a Homage cancer care visit starts from just one hour, depending on the family’s preferences and your loved one’s needs.

Does Homage provide live-in or 24-hour cancer care services?

We currently provide 24-hour cancer care services but not live-in caregiving.

For our 24-hour cancer care service, two Homage Care Professionals will be scheduled for the home visits. Care will be split into 12-hour shifts to support you and your loved one round-the-clock each day.

Who are the Homage Care Professionals?

Homage’s nurses are enrolled or registered nurses with a valid Practising Certificate with the Singapore Nursing Board (SNB) and have at least 1 year of ward experience.

Homage’s caregivers go through training, which includes emergency response, CPR & Basic Cardiac Life Support.

Homage’s physiotherapists, speech therapists, and occupational therapists are certified with the Ministry of Health’s Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC). They specialise in diverse areas and bring with them a wealth of care experiences.

All Homage Care Pros are local and come from different walks of life, each with unique specialisations and care experiences. But they all have one common trait – a passion and dedication to delivering quality nursing care to families and care recipients.

How quickly can I receive care support for cancer?

We aim to assign a suitable Care Pro for your requested visit within 2-3 days. For urgent bookings made 1-2 days before the visit date, we will try our best to match you with a Care Pro as soon as possible.

Does Homage offer packages for cancer care?

We have interim to longer-term cancer care packages with varying care durations so that you and your loved one can find a care package which best fits your needs and preferences.

Cancer care packages can also help save up to 20% for multiple sessions. Reach out to our Care Advisors at 6100 0055 for more details.

Are there subsidies for Homage cancer care services?

Yes, you can apply for financial subsidy to defray the cost of home care services for your elderly loved ones. Here is a list of Financial Assistance Schemes in Singapore, such as the Home Caregiving Grant, CareShield Life, and Interim Disability Assistance Programme for the Elderly (IDAPE) that might be helpful for you.
