What Are Family Service Centres?
Family Service Centres or FSCs are community-based social providers that provide support for families in need who are experiencing emotional, personal and social challenges in life. Just like any public service centre, Family Service Centres are run by social workers and other service professionals. While FSCs focus on helping vulnerable individuals who come from low-income families, anyone is welcome to seek help as and when they need it.
Most Family Service Centres are located in the heartlands of Singapore for the sole purpose of helping individuals and families from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds to have access to remedial and developmental social programmes within their respective communities. These programmes and efforts aim to help those in need function more effectively in their day to day life.
Who can join a Family Service Centre?
Family Service Centres are open to all individuals and families in Singapore regardless of age, race, or religion. Individuals and families at various life stages such as adolescence, elderly members, young couples, and families with young children are also welcome.
Types of Services Provided by Family Service Centres
With the extensive range of people that Family Service Centres in Singapore serve – from stressed individuals to vulnerable families -they need to have different services that can cater to that specific person and their unique situation.
Case Work Interventions
This particular service involves individual or family consultations with the FSCs personnel that will tackle the various social and emotional challenges you may be facing in your life. This is suitable for those looking for a more intimate and private intervention setting.
While family-based casework does address your personal challenges and provides you with ways to improve your current situation, it’s still not the same as psychotherapy. If you feel that you need professional psychological support, you may inform the respective service professionals at any FSC for them to get in contact with a more suitable agency or centre.
Group Work Interventions
Similar to casework, group work also functions in the same way but is done in a group setting where more people are involved. This form of intervention encourages group discussions with others who have had a similar experience with you and allows you to have a safe space to be open about your challenges.
Apart from that, group work also allows individuals to develop self-awareness when listening to others with similar issues and remind them that they are not alone.
Community Work
Getting involved in your local community is another effective way to help individuals and families support and empower one another. Besides organised community events and programmes, FSCs provides information with regards to handling simple family issues. You can also avail parenting resource materials and seek professional advice on how to care for elderly persons.
Information & Referral (I&R)
Some of the areas that FSCs specialise in include enhancing self-awareness amongst individuals and couples in relationships, improving relationships between parents and their children, as well as managing violence in the family.
However, should your area of concern go beyond the area of expertise in FSCs, they are also able to obtain support from various agencies that they are partnered with.

Can the elderly get assistance at Family Service Centres?
Since it is open to all individuals regardless of age and which life stage they are in, seniors can also seek support at Family Service Centres. Through the different eldercare services and programmes in place, vulnerable seniors with little to no social support will be able to live independently and grow old within their communities.
Thankfully, Family Care Services isn’t the only place where elderly persons can seek help from. For seniors who don’t need to be in the hospital but still need support with their daily activities, nursing homes and home care services are some options that can help them live dignified lives even while growing old.
If you have a loved one who needs care support for activities of daily living, our Care Pros can help.
