Neck pain is the second most common musculoskeletal problem

Many Singaporeans have experienced neck pain or stiffness at some points in our lives. Often, this may be caused by our daily activities and behaviours such as poor posture, working at a desk for too long without changing position or sleeping in a position that’s not ideal for our neck. Other times, neck pain may be due to an injury or indicate a more serious condition such as meningitis or even a heart attack.

It is easy to dismiss neck pain or a stiff neck as a common ailment that poses minor inconvenience and put off treatment. However, delaying treatment can lead to chronic pain that may progress into headaches, migraines and shoulder pain that radiates into other areas of the body.

Common conditions linked to neck pain

  • Injury
  • Muscle Tension or Sprain
  • Meningitis
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Slipped Disc

Say goodbye to neck pain

For many Singaporeans, the first solution we think of when we experience pain is to take it easy and get sufficient rest. While this may help to relieve neck pain and stiffness, prolonged inactivity often does more harm than good and can cause muscle deterioration which may lead to more health problems. This is why most medical professionals would recommend active physical therapy and exercise to those with neck pain and stiffness instead.

Using a combination of heat, traction, manual treatment, movement and exercise, physiotherapy can help to ease pain and stiffness and prevent future injuries or pain attacks by strengthening the spine and neck muscles. Medication may also be prescribed to reduce inflammation or for pain relief.

Top questions about Neck Pain Treatment

Service FAQ

How do I relieve neck pain?

Here are some simple home remedies you can try to alleviate neck pain:

  • Apply ice to the painful area during the first 48 to 72 hours
  • Apply heat to the affected area after that, using warm showers, hot compresses or a heating pad
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Massage the affected area
  • Keep moving your neck, but avoid sudden movements or jerking
  • Stretch your neck muscles with slow exercises, moving it up and down, side to side and ear to ear
  • Adjust your sleeping position
  • Get a suitable mattress and pillow or a special neck pillow

If these home remedies do not work, do consult a medical professional. Reach out to our Care Advisors at 6100 0055 or [email protected] and learn more about how our doctors and physiotherapists can help with neck pain.

What is the best treatment for neck and shoulder pain?

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for neck pain. There are multiple causes of neck pain and the most suitable treatment depends on the root cause of the pain.

For most people, neck and shoulder pain tends to go away after a few days. During this period, over-the-counter pain relievers and muscle relaxers, massage and/or hot and cold compresses may help to ease the discomfort.

However, pain that lasts for over 6 weeks, is unbearable even with home remedies, and/or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever and nausea may indicate a more serious underlying condition and you should see a doctor as soon as possible. If the nerve roots or spinal cord is affected, surgery may be required.

How should I sleep with neck pain?

Sleeping on our stomach put stress on our spine and neck and can cause or worsen neck pain.

If you are experiencing neck pain or stiffness, adjust your sleeping position so that you’re sleeping on your back or side. It also helps to find a pillow that best suits you.

What causes neck pain?

Some of the common causes and conditions that cause neck pain include:

  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Neck strain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Cervical spondylosis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Poor posture
  • Neck injuries, such as whiplash, herniated disc, or a pinched nerve
  • Infections, such as tuberculosis, meningitis and infection of the spine bones
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Polymyalgia rheumatica
  • Uncomfortable position of the neck while sleeping
  • Poor posture

When should I go to the doctor for neck pain?

Most of the time, neck stiffness goes away after a day or two, and simple home remedies can help to relieve the pain.

However, you should seek medical help if you experience neck pain that lasts for over 6 weeks, is unbearable even with home remedies, and/or is accompanied by any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe pain shooting down your arms
  • Weakness, numbness or tingling in your arms or legs
  • Problems controlling your bladder or bowels
  • Loss of balance
  • Sudden clumsiness
  • A recent injury or accident
  • Sudden and high fever
  • Confusion
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

If you are concerned with neck pain or stiffness, reach out to our Care Advisors at 6100 0055 or [email protected] for a free care consult and learn more about how our doctors and physiotherapists can help.

How many treatment sessions do I need for neck pain?

Every individual’s recovery and rehabilitation journey is different depending on your condition. The physiotherapist will be able to advise you of an appropriate treatment plan and frequency after the initial assessment.

Who are the Homage physiotherapists?

Homage Physiotherapists are individuals passionate and dedicated in caring for seniors and families in need. 100% Singaporean, they are certified under the Ministry of Health’s Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC).

Our physiotherapists specialised in diverse areas from orthopedic (conditions of the bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints) to geriatric (age-related or progressive conditions).

What do physiotherapists do?

Physiotherapists are allied health professionals who have an in-depth knowledge of how the body works and specialised hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat injury and disability. Trained to pinpoint the root cause of injuries and other ailments, a physiotherapist will first assess your holistic health and wellbeing, before determining the kind of movements and exercises you can and should do to aid in recovery, taking into consideration a multitude of factors including your individual needs, conditions and mobility.

A physiotherapist may use different approaches to treat and manage your condition, including movement and exercise, manual therapy and hydrotherapy.

How long does a physiotherapy visit last?

Every Homage Home Physiotherapy Visit is one-hour long (60-minutes).

What should I expect during my first physiotherapy session?

During your first visit, our physiotherapist will first assess your health and physical condition, understand the goals, develop and advise a personalised therapy treatment plan which can be completed in the home setting.

If time permits, the physiotherapist will also conduct these exercises with you during the first visit.

Should I prepare anything for my physiotherapy visit?

There is no need for any preparation.

If you have any doctor’s referral letter, previous physiotherapy/ medical reports or investigations (X-ray or MRI), we would recommend sharing these information with your physiotherapist for a more thorough understanding of your condition for therapy treatment.

Doctor is qualified, friendly

Had a good experience with Homage's teleconsultation. The doctor is qualified, friendly and guided me on examination. She also explained my symptoms to me in detail, which is useful. The report provided has detailed information, and medicine was delivered to me on the same day even though my appointment was in the evening.
