Top questions about Urine Bag Drainage

How often should a urinary drainage bag be changed?
The frequency of drainage depends on the size of the bag. The urine bag should never be full. As a rule of thumb, empty the drainage bag when it is half to two-thirds full—this usually means at least every 4 to 8 hours. A leg bag is generally smaller so you may need to empty it more often (approximately every 3 to 4 hours).
Where should the drainage bag be kept?
Always keep the urine bag below your waist level. This prevents urine from flowing back into your bladder, potentially causing an infection.
