About PEG Feeding
Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a procedure in which a flexible feeding tube is placed through the abdominal wall and into the stomach. PEG allows nutrition, fluids and/or medications to be put directly into the stomach, bypassing the mouth and oesophagus. The procedure for PEG placement can only be done at the hospitals as a surgical cut is made through the skin into the stomach. Should you need help with PEG feeding*, our licensed nurses and certified caregivers at Homage will be able to assist.
*Note: Homage nurses will only be able to assist with PEG feeding and not re-insertion.
Who Needs PEG Feeding?
Individuals who have difficulty with oral feeding (e.g. dysphagia) and those who are unable to eat and drink enough to meet their daily nutrition needs will usually require PEG feeding. This is to mitigate the chances of aspirating food and fluids into the lungs, which can lead to pneumonia.
PEG feeding can be temporary or permanent. Those recovering from a stroke, have had neurological trauma (head injuries), or are living with long-term neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease usually require PEG for the long term. Meanwhile, individuals with cancer of the head or neck usually need PEG while having treatment as swallowing may be affected.

Top questions about PEG Feeding (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy)

Can you eat if you have a PEG tube?
Depending on the reason you need a PEG tube in the first place, you may be able to eat and drink by mouth with the tube in place. However, it is important to first consult with your healthcare provider to make sure it is safe to do so.
How long does a PEG feed take?
A PEG feeding session usually lasts around 20 minutes but depends on the individual and the volume of feed. Going too fast may cause bloating or indigestion, which can be uncomfortable for the individual.
Is a PEG feeding tube permanent?
PEG feeding can be temporary or permanent. Those recovering from a stroke, have had neurological trauma (head injuries), or are living with long-term neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease usually require PEG for the long term. Meanwhile, individuals with cancer of the head or neck usually need PEG while having treatment as swallowing may be affected.
