PEG Feeding, Tube Care, and Dressing Change in Singapore

Need help with PEG feeding? Our licensed nurses can help you with PEG feeding, dressing change, and proper tube care at home.

What is Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG)?

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a procedure in which a flexible feeding tube is placed through the abdomen and into the stomach. The PEG tube allows nutrition, fluids, and/or medications to bypass the mouth and oesophagus and enter the stomach directly .

PEG tube insertions are commonly used for individuals who have difficulty with oral feeding or meeting their daily nutritional needs. If you have a PEG tube, here are some care tips:

  • Gently clean the skin around the PEG tube at least 3 times a day
  • Dry the skin to avoid irritation
  • Rotate the tube everyday to prevent it from sticking to the opening
  • Flush the PEG tube with 30-50mL of water every 4-6 hours
  • Replace dressing everyday or if it gets wet or soiled
  • Do not place dressings under the flange
  • Avoid pulling the PEG tube to prevent it from falling out

If your PEG tube falls out, you will need to go to the hospital for reinsertion. Homage nurses can help with PEG feeding, PEG tube care, and dressing replacement, but not with tube reinsertion.

“At the start of visits, I greet my clients and check in on any past medical/social history. Knowing important things like previous falls or traumas can go a long way in ensuring safety and quality service. After every visit, I prepare notes which are service-related to assist other CPs who are handling the case after me.” — Care Pro Ralphael Lim, Registered Nurse

Top questions about PEG Feeding (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy)

Service FAQ

Can you eat if you have a PEG tube?

Depending on the reason you need a PEG tube in the first place, you may be able to eat and drink by mouth with the tube in place. However, it is important to first consult with your healthcare provider to make sure it is safe to do so.

How long does a PEG feed take?

A PEG feeding session usually lasts around 20 minutes but depends on the individual and the volume of feed. Going too fast may cause bloating or indigestion, which can be uncomfortable for the individual.

Is a PEG feeding tube permanent?

PEG feeding can be temporary or permanent. Those recovering from a stroke, have had neurological trauma (head injuries), or are living with long-term neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease usually require PEG for the long term. Meanwhile, individuals with cancer of the head or neck usually need PEG while having treatment as swallowing may be affected.

Yes, you can apply for financial subsidy to defray the cost of home care services for your elderly loved ones. Here is a list of Financial Assistance Schemes in Singapore, such as the Home Caregiving Grant, CareShield Life, and Interim Disability Assistance Programme for the Elderly (IDAPE) that might be helpful for you.

Wonderful app wonderful service

Have been using this for a year to help my grandfather who frequently gets aspiration pneumonia and has difficulty leaving the house. The app is so easy to use, and the cherry on top is the wonderful service behind the app. Had some difficulty finding a doctor recently and Hakim called me back personally twice to ensure a doctor was found. Thank you so much, cannot recommend this app more.

Doctor is qualified, friendly

Had a good experience with Homage's teleconsultation. The doctor is qualified, friendly and guided me on examination. She also explained my symptoms to me in detail, which is useful. The report provided has detailed information, and medicine was delivered to me on the same day even though my appointment was in the evening.
