Tracheostomy Care and Suctioning Guidelines

Keeping the stoma clean, changing the tube holders, and moisturising the air you breathe are part and parcel of tracheostomy care. Since the tracheostomy can easily become clogged with secretions, regular tube inspection and suctioning may be required to remove thick mucus and secretions from the trachea and lower airway that cannot be cleared by coughing. This is essential in keeping the airway clear, improving breathing and oxygenation, and preventing infections.

Suctioning is usually done when you wake up and right before bed, and after respiratory treatments. Here are key things you should take note of for open tracheostomy suctioning:

  • Before suctioning, wash hands thoroughly and put on sterile gloves, a mask, and other protective gear as needed
  • Administer oxygen to the individual for a few minutes before suctioning to prevent hypoxia, a condition where the body’s tissues have insufficient levels of oxygen
  • Limit each suction pass to 10-15 seconds and allow the individual to rest and recover between passes.
  • Closely monitor oxygen saturation, heart rate, and respiratory rate during and after suctioning.

Do note that the open tracheostomy suctioning procedure may vary slightly for different individuals depending on their unique care needs. Always consult your medical team when in doubt.

What to expect during a home tracheostomy suctioning visit

Before the visit, let us know the existing healthcare products available at home for the open tracheostomy suctioning procedure.

For open tracheostomy suctioning, you need to have the following items prepared at home: Suction machine, suction catheter (size 8, 10, 12, 14), sterile water for flushing, gloves, and masks as a precautionary measure for droplets or spit.

If you do not have the appropriate products or tools required, our Homage nurse will prepare the appropriate medical products before the visit. One-way taxi fare will be required for the nurse to purchase the consumables if needed.

On the day of the visit, a licensed nurse from Homage will visit your home and understand your medical history and needs, then conduct the open suctioning and other nursing procedures you have requested for when booking the visit.

“At the start of visits, I greet my clients and check in on any past medical/social history. Knowing important things like previous falls or traumas can go a long way in ensuring safety and quality service. After every visit, I prepare notes which are service-related to assist other CPs who are handling the case after me.”  — Care Pro Ralphael Lim, Registered Nurse
