Who Needs Open Tracheostomy Suctioning?
Open tracheostomy suctioning is mainly required for individuals who are unable to cough properly due to paralysis, muscle weakness, or pain when coughing. Those who have a moist cough that does not clear secretions, are unable to effectively clear secretions from the throat or are having difficulty breathing may also need open tracheostomy suctioning.
Suctioning is usually done when you wake up and right before bed, and after respiratory treatments.
