What would a Christmas feast be without a cake to complete it? For individuals with health conditions, however, finding a suitable cake can be quite a challenge, especially for those with diabetes. Here at Homage, we believe that everyone should have the chance to join in the festive fun. Read on for a handy dandy guide to diabetic-friendly cakes in Singapore this Christmas!
What is a Diabetic-Friendly Cake?
As you may know, there are two common major types of diabetes—Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The former results from the inability of our pancreas to produce insulin for our body and the latter results from the body developing resistance to insulin over time.
In either type of diabetes, careful management of your diet is necessary and key to staying healthy and fit. Generally, when making dietary choices, Persons with Diabetes (PWDs) should follow the following nutritional recommendations:
- Choose nutrient-dense and fibre-rich carbohydrate sources
- Avoid excessively sugared food products
- Consume free fructose; naturally occurring sugar in foods
- Consider non-nutritive sweeteners or artificial sugars, such as Sucralose or Aspartame which do not affect your insulin levels
- Avoid trans and saturated fats
If you’re taking insulin to manage your diabetes, it’s best to consult a medical professional for exact advice on making your dietary choices.
With this in mind, diabetic friendly cakes should therefore at the minimum, have the following general requirements:
- No or low sugar
- No or low trans and saturated fats
- Low Glycaemic Index (GI)

Known in Singapore for their specialisation in diabetic-friendly cakes, Delcie’s Desserts and Cakes offers delicious and healthy desserts for persons with diabetes.
Rather than using cane sugar which has a high GI of 80-85, Delcie’s uses three different types of low GI natural sweeteners in their cakes: organic stevia, organic coconut sugar (GI 38), and organic agave (GI 15). Their cakes, however, still taste as sweet as normal cakes! It is highly recommended that PWDs consume sweeteners that have less than 55 GI points, making Delcie’s bakes perfect for Christmas sweet treats.
