Dementia is not a part of normal ageing.

It is a medical condition that causes brain cells to die at a faster rate than normal. The resulting progressive cognitive decline leads to increasing difficulties in coping with everyday activities. A common symptom is poor short-term memory. On average, a person with dementia lives four to eight years after diagnosis, but can live as long as 20 years.

Dementia is not just forgetfulness

The effects of dementia go beyond affecting the ability to remember things, think clearly, communicate with others, and to care for ourselves. Mood swings and even changes to your loved one’s personality and behavior are also part of it. When caring for a person with dementia, irregular behaviours and communication difficulties can make caregiving challenging.

Dementia care across the stages

The symptoms of dementia progress over time and changes across the stages. During this period, dementia can be separated into three categories: mild , moderate and advanced. It may be difficult to place a person with dementia in a specific stage as stages may overlap.

These stages help to provide some insight on the symptoms, how the abilities of our loved one change and possible care support needed.

Mild Stage

Individuals can function independently, with memory or concentration difficulties.

Care support

  • Medication reminders
  • Staying active
  • Companionship

Moderate Stage

Individuals have greater difficulty performing routine tasks and communicating. Personality and behavioral changes may take place.

Care support

  • Medication reminders
  • Staying active
  • Companionship
  • Personal hygiene and grooming
  • Check-in visits

Advanced Stage

Individuals lose their ability to communicate and eventually, to control movement. Significant personality changes may take place.

  • Assist with daily living activities (ADLs)
  • Companionship
  • Night caregiving
  • Nursing procedures

FAQs

Here are our responses to common queries families have about our care services.

What is the minimum duration for a Care Visit?

The duration of a Homage Care Visit starts from just one hour, depending on the families preferences and the loved one’s needs.

Does Homage provide live-in or 24-hour home care services?

We currently provide 24-hour home care services but not live-in caregiving.

For our 24-hour home care service, two Homage Care Professionals will be scheduled for the visits. Care will be split into 12-hour shifts to support you and your loved one around-the-clock each day.

What types of care packages do you offer?

From ad-hoc care support to chronic care management, we have short to longer-term care packages tailored to different care durations and for varied care needs so that your care recipient can find the best fit.

Reach out to our Care Advisors at 6100 0055 for more details.

Who are the Homage Care Professionals?

Homage Care Professionals are individuals who are passionate and dedicated to caring for seniors and families in need. 100% local, they are licensed nurses and trained caregivers who have caregiving experience, from all walks of life.

Are there subsidies available for Homage home care services?

Yes. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for financial subsidy under the Home Caregiving Grant to defray the cost of caregiving services.

Learn more about the eligibility criteria and application process via the Agency for Integrated Care website.

I have 2 care recipients in my home. Can a single Homage Care Professional care for both?

To ensure every individual who engages our services receives undivided attention and care, each care recipient would be matched to a dedicated Care Professional who fits their needs and preference.

If there are 2 care recipients residing in the same home who needs care in the same period, 2 Homage Care Professionals would be present to care for each recipient respectively.
